PREP SCHOOL

Science

Science develops learning skills needed through life, using evidence to make informed decisions.  At the Prep School we develop scientific ideas, enquiry skills and inquiring minds.

The boys spend a lot of time carrying out investigations and test many of the ideas they bring to the lessons. Science skills, such as critical thinking, observations, asking questions, discussion and practical skills are continually developed throughout the four years.

Science is taught in a specialised laboratory for all boys in the Prep department. The subject is taught in half term topics, many of which are revisited as the boys progress through the school. Although the scheme of work is based on the National Curriculum we regularly go beyond Key Stage 2 where appropriate.  We also have the freedom to pursue an idea in more depth if the boys express an interest.

Lessons

Prep 1 - one 60 minute and one 30 minute lesson per week.
Prep 2 - one 60 minute and one 30 minute lesson per week.
Prep 3 - two 60 minute lessons per week, weekly homework and an end of unit assessment.
Prep 4 - two 60 minute lessons per week, weekly homework and an end of unit assessment.

Setting

In Preps 1 and 2 the boys are taught in their form groups.
In Prep 3 the boys are split into three mixed ability groups of sixteen.
In Prep 4 the boys are set on ability and there is usually a set 1 and two set 2s, or two set 1s and a set 2, depending on the strength of the year group.

Extra Events

  • A Lego workshop which supports the Prep 2 electricity work.
  • Planetarium visits.
  • Cross-curricular project in the summer term of Prep 4 relating to sustainable development and energy.  Last year it was hybrid cars.
  • Science Club is run on a Tuesday after school for boys in Prep 3 and 4.  During the 50 minutes we carry out an activity, often related to the topic being taught in lesson time.
  • Visits from outside speakers to give talks and demonstrations.
