European Youth Parliament Competition Success!

On 17 March two teams from Birkdale took part in the Yorkshire and Humberside regional heats of the European Youth Parliament competition. The standard of debating was extremely high across all participating teams and it is very exciting that ENVI was selected to go forward to the National finals which will be held in Liverpool in September.

The Committee for Foreign Affairs (AFET) were extremely proactive and received great credit from the judges for their willingness to volunteer and keep the debate going. Hafsah Ali gave the opening opposition speech concerning the EU’s response to Donald Trump’s reluctance to engage in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and an impressive summation was provided by Hamza Javed who also delivered a superbly well-researched attack speech on the ethical obligations of exporting arms. Other members of the delegation Anna Fardon, Grace Firth, Lucy Liddle, Henry Stevenson, Jude Stokes and Ella Thomson took an active part in the floor debates.

The Committee for the Environment (ENVI) demonstrated great team solidarity and were praised for their teamwork and willingness to engage in the floor debate. Lewis Chinchen delivered a passionate and convincing speech on the importance of addressing mental health issues across the EU with Haaris Herzog-Khan offering a sincere and powerful summation. Erin Harvey-Gant volunteered to deliver an attack speech countering AFET’s proposals towards US relations and Tom Hodson was succinct and direct in his summation of the issues. The rest of the team, Elliott Groves, Abu Al Hassan, Ellen Knight, Jenni Parsons and Sam Pickup worked very hard in the floor debates and retained a commanding presence.
